I spent another great weekend hanging out with our FREDheads at Dana's fundraiser for the Oromocto Legion Saturday. Thanks to everyone who came out to show their support.
Dexter and the crew of kitties at home were pretty happy to see me come back too. A hurtle of little white chins and tummy's (except for Hurley, then we're talking orange across the board) met me at the door and kept me occupied for the rest of the weekend for the most part.
I also have to thank my neighbor John for reminding me how bad I am at chess. Fun to play but man I just don't think I'll ever get the hang of it. Maybe this weekend it'll be a different story. Beat, not beaten daddio!
Back to Dexter, he got lifted from cage probation this weekend (he chewed my stuff... bad bunny!) and spent some quality time with me eating licorice and generally being awesome in the kitchen. Good times with Dexter who's finally behaving like I always thought he would. Getting along good with the cats too.
Mrs. Bahb's allergies are another story. Hehehe, you know Dexter's awesome when it's worth a hundred sneezes in a couple hours just to have him hang around.
I'll drop a pic in here too one of these days. You can't help but smile when there's a bunny around, even if its just on your desktop.
Another big weekend around the corner. I'll be at the Timbits baseball jamboree Saturday at Henry Field. 2 groups of kids trying to hit my knuckle-slurve. Good luck kids, I was awesome at little league when I was 10, I should be able to kick some serious butt now!

What does treating yourself mean on August 12th?
Treating yourself is always a special thing. It makes you feel good, a pick me up after a hard day or a scraped knee, a reward after a job well done. And it’s even more satisfying sometimes to treat someone else. There aren’t many feelings that beat getting a treat because it’s a guaranteed smile.
So why treat yourself August 12th? Why not save it for next scraped knee or job well done?
Because by treating yourself on August 12th, you’re treating thousands of kids to a better chance at a better life. Treating them to research, equipment and care to give them chances tomorrow they don’t have today.
August 12th is Miracle Treat Day at Dairy Queen and all proceeds from Blizzard sales go to the IWK.
Treating yourself August 12th puts a smile on thousands of faces; yours, your family, friends, neighbours and especially children everywhere.
Treating yourself August 12th means the world.
See you there.

Alfie Zappacosta spent some time with me today and wants to spend some with you tonight. Great guy, great tunes. Can't wait!!!
But, due to some technical difficulties I can't post the whole interview today, but I will have it up as soon as possible.
I'm off for a little bit kids, but please come join us Sunday at Saint Anne Day fest at Kingsclear Reserve. It's going to be awesome!

Today the front page of the Gleaner features a sad story. 38 horses were seized by the SPCA as a result of, well, frankly, a lack of proper care.
To help offset ther costs of ensuring these horses proper care, the Fredericton Raceway is offering up their entire 50/50 draw tonight to help the SPCA.
If you have a few spare minutes and some spare chage to match, swing by Canada's oldest race track tonight and help out with this important cause.
You can also donate the following ways.
Call the SPCA, 458-8208 or visit www.spca-nb.ca
No one can make this happen better than our FRED-heads. Lets show 'em that tonight.
July 13, 2010,
You might not like the man (or the Yankees) but you can't argue with success. George Steibrenner was success personified. Money is a resource, if you have it, use it. George used his to keep writing pages on the most storied franchise in Major League Baseball.
Sorry Red Sox fans. Hey, I like 'em too. In fact, I hate the Yankees almost as much as I hate the Habs. But in the end baseball for me is a different animal than hockey.
Hockey, I'm a Bruins fan. I like watching some other teams play, but typically it's Boston or nothing. Baseball however has several players I like to watch. I'm a Mariners fan at heart but still root for the Jays and I love me some Red Sox. Heck, I like the Mets and the Phillies (don't tell either one of them or I'll never see another subway station in Manhattan) the Braves and the Brewers. There are a lot of teams worth watching and worth talking about. Stick to one team in baseball and you might not see a playoff run for 40 years.
What's any of this have to do with Steinbrenner?
He loved the game too. Remember that "if you got it use it" line from above? He had it, he used it and made a winning team out of it. He invested in the Yankees. He made a return because he invested wisely. And lucky him, he invested in something he loved.
He might not have treated the game with the utmost respect, he might have been hard to work with or even to work for. But George Steinbrenner did what he did because he loved baseball and he loved to win.
The last couple of years his family and business partners have steered the pinstriped ship and they've done a pretty darn good job. George got to see one more championship from the team he helped reshape, rebuild and reform. He got to experience the fruits of his labour. And I got to sit back and watch it happen.
So tonight when you're watching the All-Star game, grab a calzone, tip back an ice tea and take a second to thank George for letting us be a part of something special. I've got a feeling he'll be sitting with Lou, The Babe and a few other select greats in the real skybox taking in the greatest game ever played.
Play ball daddio.

You have no perspective on how fast time flies until its finally caught up to you.
My sister graduates from College in a matter of days and she's already landed an awesome job, sweet pad and all that good stuff.
Best part of it? It's somethig she's always wanted to do. My sister loves kids (we've got a family of 7 of 'em through marriage... we both kinda had to "like" kids at the very least) and now she'll spend her days taking care of them, nurturing their imaginations and opening their eyes to a world of possibilities.
Before they ever get into a classroom of any kind.
My sister is a special kid. I love her a lot. And as you can probably tell, I'm sort of proud of her.
My mom couldn't have had two kids who turned out to be more opposite, and oddly enough she wouldn't change a thing. Me either, after all, we both got her hair.
So Kayla, even though it seems not so long ago when you were climbing on my shoulders and throwing up in my hair... not so long ago that I got you to crawl for the first time using a stuffed pink and white bunny... and not so long ago you stood in the doorway of my first (of many) crummy little apartment because "big bro" wasn't coming home this time... you did it. You're a grown up.
And I never saw it coming. I just kinda thought you'd be a little girl playing with cool tools and watching Barney forever. Not sure why we lie to ourselves like that... guess it makes the journey a little easier if you forget about what waits at the end.
But it's not the end. Not even close. It's an exciting new beginning.
Congratulations Kayla, I love ya.

Looks like everyone had a blast celebrating the birth of the greatest country in the world. You've gotta like that!
Now onto serious business. I've got a high school reunion coming up in a few weeks. The best part about reunions now is facebook. I can go on there and see who's going for sure, who's not going for sure, and who's still on the fence (for sure). Facebook has also afforded me some insight to the event.
Tantramar Regional High School isn't unlike hundreds of other pre-university stops throughout Canada. It's small, my grad class had just over a hundred students spanning 5 towns. But if I had made a list on graduation day of who I thought would come back for the reunion, it would have been so wrong.
17 people from my class have said they would go. Not even enough to fill Theatre Arts 120. Class clown won't be there because he's not the class clown anymore... he's a Bio-chemical engineer with the Department of National Defense. Quarterback of the football team is working on the rigs in Fort McMurray. Class President is lost somewhere in an apple orchard picking fresh stuff for new Subway sandwiches or something... the list could go on.
But it doesn't have to. I'm not on the confirmed list either. Why? Facebook.
Lets be honest. The only reason you go to a reunion is to see who changed and how much. Who got together in the end? Did anyone find true love in high school after all? Who had kids? Who are friends with people they never would have talked to? Is the skinny girl fat, is the fat guy skinny? How's about that ex anyway? And will we still be under the rueful eye of the evil Vice Principal standing watch for public displays of affection?
The best part about reunions is catching up. With facebook, myspace, twitter and more... can anyone really say they don't know what's going on with anyone they'd want to know about? Probably not.
So thanks facebook, you've completely knocked the personality out of high school reunions, but you've also made it easier to keep in touch. Cheaper too. I'll put that gas money toward my internet bill and let you know how the crew is doing.
Am I happy about this change? Yeah, I think so. I like being able to keep in touch on my own time. Life seems a lot more spontaneous when you see that unexpected note from someone you haven't heard from for a while. Beats having to meet up at a certain place no one wants to be at for a certain amount of time no one wants to waste.
Besides, didn't we do that for four years already?
Don't forget Independence Day is Sunday... so if you see an alien, show some Canadian hospitality and crack the top on an Alpine while you direct him to the White House.

As promised my friends, here is a synopsis of what I would have done to end LOST. Think I'm right? Think i'm terrible? Got something better? E-mail bcann@fredfm.ca and I'll post some feedback on here (if I get any) next week.
Everything up to Jack, Locke and Desmond at the light cave in LOST’s series finale was fine. But it started to go off the rails shortly thereafter. Here’s a quick synopsis of what I think should have happened to send us all home happy.
First and foremost, Desmond goes down the cave and pulls the plug, stuff starts to crumble, light starts to go mad... and then, with the work done, Locke attacks Jack. Sawyer sees this and runs to help the good doctor, but ends up down in the light cave as well. The light hasn’t gone out yet, and we see the familiar smoke shoot back out of the hole as the light finally dies.
After Jack kills Locke (Kate’s no hero in my LOST) the camera shows us Sawyer’s body in the water. Kate wants to stay and say goodbye, Jack says this is her last chance to leave, so she tearfully takes it. Jack stays on the island and we see him sitting on the rocks watching the plane take off moments later...
Now we drop over to the flash-forwards and clean up that mess. Nearly everything is the same right up until the end. Desmond’s actual goal is to bring everyone together so they can be fixed.
You’ll find many parallels between LOST and Stephen King’s Dark Tower Series. The Dark Tower is a 7 book journey following Roland, the last Gunslinger on his quest to find the Dark Tower. The Dark Tower is held up by six beams and it controls time and all the worlds within the universe. He needs to find the Tower and keep it from crumbling, thus ending not only the world, but worlds before it’s too late. If he can pull it off, everyone who died for his cause and everyone who suffered for his cause could theoretically be atoned for. And the one true world will be safe. Desmond is very much like Roland.
Since LOST’s creators borrowed so heavily from King anyway, that would be his mission. He is in this flash-forward reality to make sure everyone comes together in the end taking the proper steps to save the island; The last “beam” holding time and reality as we know it together. The one true reality. Desmond realizes this on the island and that’s why he (not Jack) plugs the cork back in and the light comes back on. This in the “flash-forward” world means the following.
Rousseau and Ben get together to raise Alex, Jack fixes Locke and he gets to walk down the isle with Helen, Sawyer gets together with Juliet, Hurley gets Libby, Jack gets Kate, Desmond gets Penny, Daniel gets Charlotte, Sun and Jin have a baby, Sayid gets Nadia, Michael, Shannon and Anna Lucia are still dead… everybody’s happy.
And then we go back to the island to see…
Jack giving a small wave as the Ajira plane escapes from the island forever. Jack looks down and then we see a shadow cast. Jack looks up and there’s Sawyer sitting down beside him.
Sawyer: Doc...
Jack: I like that shirt James... black is your color. (pausing) Look up there (camera shows the plane) the picture of progress...
Sawyer: You really believe that don’t you?
Jack: (smiling and nodding) A wise man convinced me.
Sawyer: A real wise man doesn’t die for the cause; he sends others to do it for him.
Jack: (thoughtfully) You know I’m right James.
Sawyer: (smiling he sarcastically responds) That’s all that matters huh Doc? You being right... what makes you so sure you got all the answers?
Jack stares back out at the ocean and says nothing.
Sawyer: This wise man… he tell you to keep your mouth shut too?
Jack: Progress James. The sooner you understand that, the better off you’ll be.
Sawyer: Son of a b***h. Do you have any idea how bad I want to kill you?
Jack: Yeah... but you can’t.
Sawyer: Not yet. Progress Doc... (Sawyer walks away passing Desmond as he does)
Jack calls after him: I’ll be here waiting James.
Desmond: (to Jack) What was that all about brotha?
Jack: The oldest game in the world. Two players, two sides,
Desmond: One is light, one is dark...
Jack: (smiling he lays back against the rock he’s been sitting on, arms crossed behind his head)
Desmond: Jack?
Jack: Desmond.
Desmond: (hesitantly) Which side are we?
The camera closes in tight on Jack’s face as it breaks into a smile. It looks like he’s about to answer and then his eyes close…

Every time I see that picture of me I can't help but think "Welcome to the wonderful world of magic." I'll post a different one later. One that doesn't make me look so much like a tripped out hippie magician playing dress up.
But really, I'm the least photogenic guy in the world... from a young age my folks had to trick me into getting my picture taken. Dad would stand behind the camera man and hold up a stuffed animal and go "Bobby look!" And I'd look up and smile, maybe drool a little. It started getting embarassing right around the grad pictures. Bad smile, shiny chin and a caption that would ensure I'd never date a cheerleader.
"Dad, seriously, put cuddles back on my bed where he belongs!"
Yep... another award winner at fredfm.ca. I swear they're going to tell me to stop doing these soon.
Be well,
Bob

About two weeks ago I learned something about myself. In fact, I answered a question I know I've been asked hundreds of times in my life but never responded to until now. Fulfilled? I suppose.
The question in question? "What would I do for a Klondike Bar?"
I never really thought about it before... how far would I go to get my hands on an ice cream sandwich? I certainly wouldn't cause anybody harm... wouldn't give up worldly possessions or my grandma's killer chocolate chip cookie recipe (speaking of which... I'd like to have a few of those nanny, so if you're reading, make with the goods). So what would I do?
I'd wait for a sale! That's right, Sobey's had a deal on Klondike Bars and my immediate reaction on sight was "my time is now." I grabbed that box, trucked over to the nearest checkout line and sat in the car all the way home anxiously awaiting my maiden voyage into the land of chocolate covered ice cream without a stick.
You know what? The stick would have made a huge difference. Three layers of chocolate covered chocolate ice cream (milk, dark, white) soon found its way onto my lap, my shirt, my beard and my table. Of course there's no setting it down because the wrapper is also covered in chocolate and my cats are circling this increasingly desperate crisis like so many sharks in a pool filled with chum. So I did what any man would do in this situation...
I stuffed the rest of it in my mouth and started making that "ah it's so cold" face while fighting off a certain ice cream headache and yelling (as much as I could around an obscene mouthfull of ice cream) "Please help, I'm being cryogenically frozen from the inside out!"
I'm almost sure now looking back that I could have chosen a simpler message to get my point across.
I chewed the rest of this thing, swallowed it down and tossed the wrapper in the garbage. My head was pounding, I was insanely cold and Ari (lead constipator in Bob's zoo) had wrangled the wrapper out of the trash and was dragging it all over the house... because the dozen toys and two other cats aren't nearly enough to keep her busy I suppose... leaving a trail of melting chocolate and ice cream all over the house. Ultimately it ended up in their litter box... which, I might argue, is where the whole thing belonged in
the first place.
So anyway, I ate a Klondike Bar and could finally answer the age old question. What would I do (ew-ew) for a Klondike Bar?
Nothing... but if I ever get another one I'll trade you straight up for a Drumstick.

Wait, that's not right...

First of all, I hope everyone had the Valentine's Day they were looking for. Secondly, congrats to all the Canadian athletes who have competed in the Olympics so far. Win or lose you're doing us all proud by representing the red and white on the worlds biggest stage. Be proud, because we're all proud of you.
While watching the Olympics on Valentine's Day I heard someone say "imagine training for 4 years, or your whole life for that matter... to be the best and then show up on the big day and blow it!"
Imagine.
You know what? I was involved in a little bit of a competition myself over the last little while. I've been "training" for this little competition since I started paying my own way in the world. This metaphorical medal was destined to be mine. There was no question the team I'm part of was good enough to win. There's no question we had the talent and there's no question our team has and had the dedication.
Everyday since I left the hallowed halls of NBCC Woodstock I've been training for this moment, and today I found out I didn't get the gold. Our team walked away with the silver instead.
Imagine.
Know what? It wouldn't have mattered if we finished last. I wouldn't be any less proud of the work we put together and I certainly couldn't be prouder of our team for making it this far.
Now I know most of you don't know what I'm referring to, and that's ok. It's not the prize and competition that matter, it's the story and the lesson. The story has essentially been told. We competed and didn't win. But the lesson is as follows.
Losing is a fact of life. If you won at everything you did, life would get pretty boring pretty fast. Live for the competition, and compete to win, but don't be defined by winning and losing. Be proud of where you make it and make every experience count.
Experience man. That's what you live for. Losing is an experience. And you know what? It's the only one that pushes you to get better.
Get some experience tonight and everyday.
Bob

The Ketchup packet has been a part of our lives for over 40 years. Heinze, the undisputed King of the Condiments has broken new ground with the first major packaging redesign in the history of this product. Basically it'll be a combination of the classic tear off end for squeezing and a pull tab so you can dip your ketchupless delicacies. Dip... squeeze... the choice is yours. I can't possibly be the only one excited about this prospect.
They won't be available to the masses for a good while yet. Currently they're testing them in Mid-West markets and will hopefully offer them in stores by September. Something you're interested in? Something that probably shouldn't take up so much of my blog or my day? Call me at 455-FRED (3733) and tell me what you think.

Yeah, I checked the date... it's still not too early to talk about softball.
You'd think after taking a line drive in the face from the pitchers mound last year I'd be a little upset with the uncrowned sport of kings... instead I'm just greatful I choose radio instead of TV. And, you'd think I'd wanna take it a little easier this year... nope. Instead I'm putting a team into the Oromocto Men's Slow Pitch league. This is one of the most competitive leagues you'll find in the Greater Fredericton area. Six teams are currently set to take the field at the end of May and they'd love to add a few more. In fact, they asked me last night to spread the word that they'd like even more fresh blood from Fredericton to join the boys in Oromocto.
I've played in Fredericton for the last 7 years, and I'll play here again this year too. There's some great competition in the mixed league and I've made some tremendous friends along the way. Would I give that up? To quote another radio friend of mine "Not a chance!! I'm in great shape!" (Well, the first part of that is accurate at least). I'm just looking forward to another summer jampacked with good ball and better friends. In both cases it's very much a case of "the more the merrier."
So, long story short... if you like softball and want some stiff competition, this is the league for you. A guaranteed 30+ games plus a tournament to start the year and a playoff finish, many other tournaments throughout the year, a shot at playing away against some of the Maritimes best players and just a general good time every Monday and Tuesday night. Paid umpires, a softball council looking out for the best interests of the league and players, a rep from each team to make sure everyone's in the loop. It's a beautiful experience and well worth the drive. Hit the link below daddio, and lets play ball!

Colin James will join us on the Gettin' Home show tomorrow afternoon leading into his performance tomorrow night at the Playhouse. If you're not familiar with his work, pick up his latest effort Rooftops and Satellites. Another great album from a multi time Canadian Entertainer of the year winner. A nice mix of good ole rock and roll and blues, Colin is a can't miss performer.
Now, onto tonight. As I mentioned, Lost kicks off its much anticipated final season with the 2 hour long "LAX." If you know what LAX is, you should be able to piece a little something together about where we'll open up... but if you've been following Lost at all... you know there's a lot more to it than that. Should be an exciting night rife with water cooler talk for the morning. Don't let reality TV fool you kids, we're living through the true golden ages now... all with PVR and HD. Gotta love it.
Thanks for tuning in and don't hesitate to call 455-FRED to tell me what's on your mind. It's your show, I'm just pushing buttons.

Hi, my name is Bob and I'm a Boxing Day shopper.
And I hate it. The long lines just to get your stuff, the longer lines to return what you don't want and the longest line of all to pay for the new things you were sure you had on your list but for some reason didn't get. Speaking of long lines, Future Shop was insane on Sunday. I drove by and saw a line of people almost all the way back to Zellers 2 hours after the place was open. Haven't seen a line like that since AC/DC tickets went on sale. Funny thing is? In the flyer they actually listed the number of each item thay had in stock. So if you wanted one of the 6 half price 1080P TV's they had in and you were number 438 in line... well... hope you were looking for blank DVD's or something too... otherwise you might have walked away somewhat disappointed.
There were no disappointments for big daddio though. I went searching for the perfect Christmas gift, and I got it! See, diamonds didn't work, concert tickets didn't work... my whole life nothing has brought the twinkle to my special lady's eye the way I've always envisioned. Until now.
I have two cats, a rabbit, a turtle and probably some more animals at my house. I love some of them and tolerate them all. But man, it's a lot of clean up. And since I work here and she works from home, Mrs. Bob gets stuck with the brunt of it until the weekend comes. That's a long time to let a litter box go, you know what I mean?
So, I got her a self cleaning litter box. Yeah, I know, sounds like a pretty lame gift right? I think so too. But she LOVES it. Every time she hears the little electronic "whirr" she smiles knowing that's one mess that's taking care of itself. She loves it, and that's what really matters.
Oh! And I like what I got too.
Only one problem now... life's a little too easy and she's talking about another cat. Where's the line between pet lover and crazy cat lady lie anyway? At least there's no line up right now at the SPCA.
Happy New Year daddio's.
Bob
